How to filter remote, hybrid, and on-site jobs
Updated October 11, 2026 · 3 min read
Most remote searches fail for a boring reason: the word remote shows up in the wrong field. It is in the benefits, the location says "remote" while the team meets in one city three days a week, or a worldwide search returns offices you will never move to. Work mode has to be a filter, not a hope.
Three modes, and they are not a mood
- Remote: you are not expected on a site as the normal week. The company may still limit which country you work from.
- Hybrid: some days in a place. If you do not live near that place, it is an on-site job with softer language.
- On-site: the work happens at a location. Commute and city are the search, not an afterthought.
In JobLookout these are separate from country. Pick the countries you can work in, then pick the modes you will accept. Selecting every mode is the same as selecting none. If you only want remote, say only remote.
Country still matters for remote roles
A remote posting is often "remote in this country." Payroll, tax, hours of overlap, and the right to work do not disappear because the office is optional. A search for remote roles in Canada is a different list from remote roles in the United States. Run the search you can accept an offer from.
When you open the career page, read the location line again. Filters catch the structured field. The paragraph under it is where a company admits the team is in one city and "remote" means remote-from-that-city.
A setting that stays put
Set this once when you first open the job list and adjust it when your life changes, not at the start of every session. The list should already respect it. If a week of results is full of office roles, the filter is off or set too wide. Fix the filter before you blame the market, then keep the pass short the way the weekday routine describes.
Hybrid in your city is its own search, and it is often the gap. People either hunt fully remote or fully local and miss the roles that are three days in the place they already live. If that is you, set hybrid in JobLookout and keep the country tight.
