How to apply on a Greenhouse job board
Updated November 1, 2026 · 3 min read
Greenhouse is the applicant tracking system behind the career pages of many tech and fast-growing companies. Its job boards live at addresses like boards.greenhouse.io or job-boards.greenhouse.io followed by the company name, or they are embedded on the company's own careers page. The application is short, usually a single page, and you rarely need an account.
What the form asks for
- Name, email, and phone.
- Your resume, uploaded as a file, linked from cloud storage, or pasted as text.
- A cover letter, which is often optional.
- Links such as LinkedIn, GitHub, or a portfolio.
- Custom questions the company adds: work authorization, sponsorship, location, salary expectations, or why you want the role.
- In the US, voluntary self-identification questions, which are optional.
The custom questions are where people read
The standard fields get skimmed. The questions the company wrote itself are there because someone wants the answers. Answer them specifically, in two to four sentences, with something from your actual work. A copied paragraph about passion is easy to spot.
If there is a salary question and the posting shows a range, answer inside that range unless you have a reason not to. If there is no range, give your own range based on the level and location.
Small things that help
- Upload a PDF named with your name and the role, not resume_final_v7.
- Use the email you actually read. Interview invitations arrive there.
- Read the whole posting once before you start. Some companies hide a specific instruction near the end.
- Check your spam folder for the confirmation email.
After you submit
You see a confirmation on screen, and most companies send a confirmation email. Most Greenhouse boards do not give you a status page, so updates arrive by email, sometimes weeks later. Each role is a separate application. You can apply to more than one role at the same company, but the recruiting team sees all of them, so stick to the ones that fit.
How to tell a role has closed
A closed Greenhouse posting usually redirects to the company's main board or shows a not-found message. If the link you found elsewhere does that, the role is gone, whatever the other site says. More on that in how to spot a ghost job.
Lever and Ashby work the same way
Lever boards live at jobs.lever.co followed by the company name. The form is one page: resume, contact details, links, an additional information box, and the company's own questions. Ashby boards live at jobs.ashbyhq.com, often list every open role on one page with filters, and frequently offer to fill the form from your resume. In both cases, no account is needed, and the custom questions matter most.
Many of the roles you can apply to this way never get posted on LinkedIn or Indeed. JobLookout collects them from company career pages, including Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby boards. Start from jobs by title, and for longer corporate applications, read how to get through a Workday application.
